Pain in the Backside!


Sciatica for many, can be literally a pain in the backside. Who knew a nerve could cause so much pain!

Sciatica is back pain which is caused by an issue with the sciatic nerve. This pain generally runs down from the back and through the back of the legs. It can affect the hip, bum and legs. 

Cause of sciatica?

During pregnancy sciatica is very common and it can be caused by the tension in muscles. The weight of the baby and also the position of the baby can cause pain due to the pressure on the nerve.

Symptoms of sciatic pain

  • Pain in one of the sides of your bum or leg
  • Radiating pain down the leg
  • Painful sitting, walking or standing
  • Sharp/ uncomfortable pain
  • Pins and needles in the leg or foot

Treatment of sciatica

  • Visit a chiropractor or physiotherapist
  • Get a prenatal massage
  • Have acupuncture
  • Prenatal yoga
  • At home stretches
  • Use a heat pack
  • Pelvic tilts and kegel exercises which will strengthen your core
  • Talk to your doctor

Although it can get painful and uncomfortable sciatica normally goes away after pregnancy. Always consult your doctor before trying something new.
