Family Day is a free, fun day of activities at dlr LexIcon, Dun Laoghaire library, Dublin which will take place tomorrow 22 June, 2019

At the event the Summer Stars Reading programme 2019, will officially be launched and will run for the summer months from now until 31th August.

Summer Stars

Summer Stars is a free national reading challenge which takes places over the summer months to encourage children to begin or continue reading for pleasure while on school holidays.

Sometimes children can regress in their reading skills between the end of one school year and the beginning of the next so Summer Stars is a great way to keep up those skills in an enjoyable way.

The challenge is open to children of all ages and all reading counts – independent reading, shared reading, bedtime reading. Children can count any books read as part of the challenge, not just library books.

Each child who registers for the programme at their local library will have access to lots of books during the summer.

Children will receive their own Summer Stars Reading Card to record their progress and the Summer Stars Reward Stamp will be added to their card at the library for each book read.

Environment awareness

The family day will feature a number of events from art workshops to archaeology digs, yoga storytelling to music and dancing as well as a talk from their special guest speaker, Flossie the Beach Cleaner.

Flossie is a local environmental activist who is on a mission to ‘clean beaches and coastal waters as well as raise awareness about the environment and climate change.’

All events are free.
