Mattel have brought out a new range of diverse Barbie dolls which have different physical attributes. The dolls have Vitiligo, no hair, and different body types.
In the last few years, Mattel has been making huge changes to reflect the world that girls actually see around them. Mattel have added dolls with prosthetic limbs and wheelchairs in the last year which have had amazing positive reactions online.
In the past, Barbie has been dragged through the mud for being incredibly stereotypical. They have since been trying to reinvent themselves and it isn’t stopping there. In 2017 they brought out a doll wearing a hijab and from then we have seen dolls with varying body shapes, skin shades, hairstyles and clothing.
This is a positive move for Barbie, as it’s showcasing that beauty doesn’t come in one form, it comes in many. Young girls will be able to relate to these dolls more because of the diversity. Hopefully they will see themselves in the dolls and be inspired to be whoever they want to be.
Although these are steps forward in the right direction, they still have a long way to go. They are showing more diversity but the dolls still have ‘perfect’ faces with symmetrical noses and high cheekbones, which don’t reflect the general public.
Check out some of the dolls here.
What do you think about Barbie? Are Mattel a long way off of creating more realistic dolls?
