GRANNY & GRANDAD STILL MOST POPULAR NAME FOR GRANDPARENTS, SURVEY FINDS
My Nametags Survey ahead of Grandparents’ Day this Sunday, 13th September 2020
Is it pops, grandma, papa or granny? This Sunday, 13th September is Grandparents’ Day, so with that in mind My Nametags have carried out some research to see what grandparents are most fondly known as in Ireland by their families and grandchildren.
The traditional names Granny and Grandad came tops, particularly in Dublin and Cork, closely followed by Nanny and Grandfather. Also, in the top selection were Grandpa, Papa, Gramps and Pops for grandfathers, which appeared popular in Galway, Limerick, Laois and Wicklow, while grandmothers were also called Nannie, Grandma and Nana, popular in Wexford, Waterford and Kildare.
This year, Grandparents’ Day is extra special after a time which was difficult for families. With the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions placing families under new and unique pressures, a recent survey by My Nametags revealed that levels of parental guilt were at an all-time high during lock-down. In fact, almost three quarters of Irish parents are feeling additional guilt due to the lockdown measures, despite having no control over the situation. The most common reasons were having to keeping their children indoors (33%), that their children were bored (30%), that they weren’t able to spend time with other relatives (30%), and that they weren’t home-schooling them properly (20%). Interestingly, 20% of Irish parents also admitted to feeling guilty that they were not enjoying the extra time they are getting to spend with their children, with men more likely to feel guilty about this than women.
Speaking about the findings, My Nametags Founder, Lars B. Andersen, said: “30% of grandparents are the main carers of their grandchildren and indeed are often the purchasers of nametags for their grandchildren. We know from experience people have various loving names for their grandparents, but our research shows that traditional names are tops. We hope grandparents enjoy their special day this Sunday, safely, especially in light of the current situation and the past few difficult month”.
Erin Cafferkey, Marketing Executive, My Nametags, commented: “I am very close to my granny and we live close by so this Grandparents’ Day I will be celebrating her and having some quality time with her. I am with the top of the poll as I call my grandmother granny! My Nametags is a brand for all the family and we are delighted to celebrate and champion grandparents day”.
