More than a third of parents in Ireland (39%) reported that their children have a skin condition such as dry or irritated skin, and the true impacts of this have been laid bare through the Aveeno Baby Healthy Skin Index research findings.

“Skin conditions such as dry and irritated skin, sensitive skin and eczema can really have a lasting impact on a childhood,” explained Paula Moriarty, Children’s Nurse and Professional Skincare Consultant for Aveeno Baby.

The research showed that of those with skin conditions, 6% are impacted every single day – equating to over 28,000 children in Ireland.

Other Findings

The research also reports that the majority (59%) of children with skin conditions are missing out on everyday occasions that create the happiest of childhood memories – with some of the most common being swimming excursions (32%), school or creche (17%), sleepovers at friends or families (10%) and birthday parties (5%).

Beyond the physical irritation of skin conditions, it was also revealed that 15% of children with skin conditions have experienced bullying or social isolation, according to their parents.

“It is certainly sad to hear about children missing out on happy occasions and even more shocking to hear that bullying may be taking place,” added Moriarty.

Trigger Conditions

Almost a quarter (24%) say they miss out on outdoor activities in trigger conditions such as hot or cold weather, and 13% of those affected choose not to have a pet at home due to their skin condition.

“Harsh products or even washing with water alone can have a drying effect on infant skin, so regular moisturisation is recommended,” said Moriarty.
