Autumn maternity fashion EDIT

In order for mums-to-be to be fashion forward this Autumn, you’ll have to take a step back to the 1970’s bourgeoisie era, writes Donna Ahern.

Wrap party

Maternity Wrap Top, €29.95, Gebe

The Autumn collections and fashion shows are a very evident tribute to the late 1970s.

The style during this conservative fashion era was quite ladylike, with strong emphasis on confidence and bold choices.

So from a fashion perspective, its the perfect time to be an expectant mum as you can stay snug this season, with no compromise on style.

Kick start the bourgeoisie look with this shimmery rusty wrap top.

Into the west

Multi Coloured Snakeskin Western Ankle Boots, €46, Miss Selfridge

Snakeskin western boots were all the rage in the 1970s. If you don’t believe me google Charlie’s Angels and look at their feet.

In many cases of course, some moms-to-be tend to shy away from boots with too high a heel.

However, for those of you that like a little bit of elevation during your pregnancy, try these Multi Coloured Snakeskin Western Ankle Boots, perhaps for your first and second trimester to get the look.

Drop in

Mini Resin Short Drop Earrings, €6.50, Accessorize

Despite the fact that the clothing was quite demure, the most popular jewellery during the 1970’s was was generally eye-catching.

So when choosing your earrings this season think big and bold.

Blue teal

Teal Blue Saddle Bag, €27, Dorothy Perkins

As you may have noticed from this fashion spread nestled between the earthy beiges and brown is a hint of teal.

In order to accentuate the subtle pop of blue that is screaming to get out, match any of this seasons looks with this retro-style saddle bag.

A Srunchie?

Polka Pot, Srunchie (3 pack), €6, Next

Without a shadow of a doubt, one of the biggest surprise fashion come backs that I have ever witnessed has to be the return of the scrunchie.

If anyone has ever seen the Sex and the City episode where Carrie slags her author boyfriend Berger off for mentioning a scrunchie in his novel, it turns out he was a lot more fashion forward than she gave him credit for.

It appears there was a lot more to Berger than his “He’s just not that into you” quip to Miranda, which saved many women sleepless nights of navigating their way through the complexities of their relationships.

He was right then so…

Caped hero

Formal cape, €75.40, Principles

Capes it seems have made a big comeback also this season.

The beauty of this formal cape is that it fastens close to the collar bone.

The free fall nature of the cape means of course that it will expand with your growing bump making it the perfect over coat for the full term of your pregnancy.

Fit in knit

Stripe Maternity Knitted Top, €20 (Was €40), Next

Perhaps the most practical fashion item of the lot, but again the polo necks will always carry that subtle nod to the 1970s.

Not only is this knitted top bang on trend, it’s colour palette features autumn hues with straps of teal.
