Learn to love your tummy & build confidence after a C-section

Many women feel they aren’t given enough support and find it hard to build confidence after a C-section.  They can feel daunted by scar care and are often left with minimal aftercare and nowhere to turn to for advice. Many experience pain, discomfort or restriction around their scars or have lower back pain. Those may also be struggling to lose the ‘overhang’ or ‘mummy tummy’ that so many of us have.

Scar-savvy experts and mums themselves, Hannah and Roxanne have come together to create a powerhouse of information for new mums. “We found many C-sections mums telling us they couldn’t touch their scars, that even a year after their birth they were still in pain and feeling numb. Women are often told that this is normal and that not much can be done. We don’t believe this to be the case.  Scar tissue is created after the body goes through trauma such as a C-Section. It has the potential to cause other issues in the body such as pain, heavier periods and digestive issues. We believe this can be helped with massage and movement.”

After Roxanne’s C-Section a few years ago she went to Hannah for advice on scar massage. She found that Hannah’s massage recovery techniques not only helped her scar heal better but also helped her connect mentally with her body again too. Roxanne found combining this with her tailor-made postnatal fitness programme enhanced her recovery in a safe and really effective way.

Over the last few years, Hannah and Roxanne have been working with other mums in similar situations to recover from their C-Sections both physically and mentally. What can you do to help?

Massage and exercise are two ways you can really support your healing and recovery. It can also give you the confidence to touch your scar and help you to reconnect with your tummy.

Massage is an amazing tool for preventing the build-up of scar tissue. It’s easy to forget that your scar is not just the line you see on the surface. Your scar is running all the way through to your uterus, through layers and layers of tissue. A build-up of scar tissue all the way through can occur. Combining massage with movement and exercise to build your inner core strength, learn what to do about Diastasis Recti. Even better, know which exercises to do, to make sure you recover more quickly and in the most effective way.

5 ways massage and exercise can help your recovery:

Initial Healing

Movement is essential to support your healing. Start moving around as soon as you can. Have someone assist you getting up out of bed at first. Try to walk a little each day adding a few more steps each time. Don’t push your body, you will know when it’s too much. When getting up out of bed roll on to your side & push up from there this will help your abdominals heal. Getting that posture back and blood flowing round your body again is important for your muscle recovery & healing.

Pain/restriction around your scar

Scar massage can help prevent the build-up of scar tissue and help to ease pain or restriction around your scar. Once your scar is fully healed you can start to massage. We really recommend doing this, it can help with the scar tissue and physical appearance of your scar.

Strengthen your body

Once you have been signed off by your doctor, it is super important to repair and strengthen your inner core & move your body. Exercises which help you build a strong foundation and sculpt key muscles are essential for your posture and stability.

Numbness/emotions

A huge part of C-Section recovery is learning how to reconnect with your tummy and core. Physical and emotional trauma can contribute to numbness and disconnection with your tummy. Learning how to activate your inner core and pelvic floor correctly alongside practicing breathing down to your scar can really help.

Reconnect and learn to love your tummy

Our tummies are often a source of shame for a lot of women and a place we hold a lot of emotion. Touching your scar, exercising in the right way and massaging your tummy can give you confidence in your body. It can help you to build confidence after a C-section and reconnect with your tummy. Even learn to love and accept your scar.
